One Direction Facts
Made up of members from England and Ireland, One Direction came together as a band in London in 2010. Members include Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. Each member of the band had auditioned as a solo act on the British X Factor and were subsequently put together to compete in the group category. The band fared well, becoming Simon Cowell's last act in the competition and eventually winning third place overall. The single that would have been released had they won ("Forever Young") was leaked onto the Internet soon after and played a part in the band rocketing to international fame.
Even though they did not win, Cowell saw something special in the members of One Direction and signed them to his record label, Syco Records. The band released their debut album, "Up All Night" in 2011. It was the most pre-ordered single ever in history on Sony Music Entertainment. The album's single "That's What Makes You Beautiful" topped the charts internationally. Its success led the band to be inducted into Guinness World Records as it was the first time a debut album that was released by a British group bowed at number one on Billboard's U.S. 200 chart. The band's second album, "Take Me Home" was released in November 2012. They will be starting a world tour in February 2013. Tickets have already sold more than 15 million dollars in Australia and New Zealand.
The band is also the subject of two books. The first was titled "One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story) and was published by HarperCollins in February 2011. The book reached number one on the Sunday Times Bestseller List. "Dare to Dream: Life as One Direct" was published in May 2012 and released in the United States. The band has acted as brand ambassadors for Pokemon Black and White and released two limited edition cell phones, the Nokia C2-02 and the Nokia C3-00.
In 2012, a United States-based band, also claiming to go by One Direction, sued the band. They stated that they had been using the name since 2009 and sued for three times the profit plus one million in damages. The lesser-known band was counter-sued for attempting financial gain on someone else's work since they had never had the name trademarked. In September, One Direction was allowed to keep their name and the U.S.-based band changed its name. Both stated they were happy with the outcome. The spat was not highly publicized and is a lesser known fun fact about One Direction.
One Direction's success has led to the return of the success of boy bands and has been described as the new British Invasion in the United States. The band has sold more than 12 million albums and videos (August 2012), has won several BRIT and MTV VMA Awards and is currently a 50 million business empire. Their success is not only attributed to their obvious talents, but also to the fact that they create teen dance pop while focusing on a clean-cut, wholesome image that is family-friendly.
